Environment & Infrastructure has announced a 4.75% increase in maximum taxi fares, effective from 25th November.
This decision follows a public consultation considering various factors, including taxi operating costs and the island's median earnings.
The increase applies to all current tariffs. For example, a two-mile journey on Tariff 1 will rise from £6.10 to £6.50, while a five-mile journey on Tariff 2 will increase from £23.10 to £24.10.
These are the maximum fares that taxi drivers can charge, companies may choose to set lower prices.
In addition to the fare increase, the Committee has agreed to changes in the taxi tariff structure based on proposals from the Guernsey Taxi Drivers Association.
Notably, the start of the evening/public holiday fares (tariffs 2, 4, and 6) will commence at 6pm on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, an hour earlier than previously established.
The tariff seating capacity categories have also been revised. The new categories will be 1-4 passengers, 5-6 passengers, and 7-8 passengers.
This adjustment acknowledges that the same vehicle type can accommodate either five or six passengers, while larger vehicles are typically needed for seven or more passengers.
Other proposals considered during the consultation process were not approved.
The Committee decided against starting evening/public holiday tariffs earlier on Fridays, which would have mirrored weekend timings, and opted not to impose higher tariffs throughout Saturdays and Sundays.
The current 60p surcharge for Sundays has also been removed.
The consultation received 13 responses from both the public and taxi industry professionals.
Deputy Adrian Gabriel, Vice-President of the Committee, emphasised the consultation's importance in revealing potential negative impacts of the proposed changes.
“This consultation has been really helpful in highlighting what could have been some unintended negative consequences of the proposed changes to the tariff structure, so we’ve quickly taken this feedback on board and have taken steps to continue to support the industry."
