Guernsey is gearing up to commemorate and celebrate the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day with a series of events designed to resonate with all islanders.

The Committee for Education, Sport & Culture, in collaboration with the Liberation Day 80 Oversight Board led by Helen Glencross, Head of Heritage Services, has been spearheading the planning process to ensure next year's celebration is a memorable one.

Marking a significant milestone in Guernsey's calendar, the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day aims to reflect the island's journey and commemorate the experiences of its inhabitants during the Occupation.

In response to community feedback and the importance of the milestone year, the Committee has promised a grander focus on the St Peter Port seafront. This area will feature a diverse programme of events spread across various piers, from North Beach to Castle Cornet, encompassing an array of activities, including a Cavalcade, vintage fair, food fayre, and charity zone. An essential aspect of the celebrations will be the vintage fair on Crown Pier and an open-air concert featuring both visiting and local performers on North Beach.

The traditional morning events such as the commemorative parade and church service will continue to be integral parts of Liberation Day. Furthermore, parish-based events, which have seen growth in success over the years, will receive funding to ensure a truly island-wide celebration.

Deputy Sue Aldwell, representing the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture for Liberation Day, expressed gratitude towards the many individuals working to make the day special: "We began planning for the 80th Liberation Day immediately after 2023’s commemorations and it has very much ramped up in the past few weeks.

"We’re making excellent progress, and I’d like to thank the many people in and outside the States who are working with us. This is a major milestone, and we want to deliver a day that is remembered for years to come. Every year, Liberation Day is a special day in the Guernsey calendar, but next year is going to be an even bigger occasion."

To support the ambitious plans for the day, the organisers are working closely with the Association of Guernsey Charities to gather volunteers essential in delivering a successful event.

Helen Glencross added: "We are very conscious of the significance of the 80th Liberation Day, so we are committed to delivering a fantastic day that remembers the experience of Islanders during the Occupation and celebrates our Liberation."

Additionally, the organisers are seeking sponsors for some of the major events, opening opportunities for businesses to contribute to the celebration’s success.

The committee will make further announcements regarding the events and activities constituting the day's programme over the coming months through various media channels and the Liberationday.gg website.
